NR361 Week 6 Discussion: Distractors in our Environments. Distractions are everywhere. They may include cellphones, multiple alarms sounding, overhead paging, monitors beeping, and various interruptions that disrupt your clinical practice.

Give an example of an ethical or legal issue that may arise if a patient has a poor outcome or sentinel event because of a distraction such as alarm fatigue. What does evidence reveal about alarm fatigue and distractions in healthcare when it comes to patient safety?


Medical devices such as alarms are designed to save lives. The alerts from these devices alert the doctors, nurses, or caregivers of the state in which the patient is in at the present moment. Increased number of these gadgets in each patient’s room may lead to the caregivers suffering from alarm fatigue-this is the sensory overload that occurs when healthcare professionals are exposed to an excessive number of alarms, which can result in desensitization to alarms and an increased rate of missed alarms (Jones, 2014).
