Introduction to the Activity

As you well know from personal experience, being part of a group has its advantages and disadvantages. You’ve also no doubt noticed that marketers often use persuasive tactics to sell their products. How does being in a group influence the effectiveness of persuasive tactics? In this discussion, you will be demonstrating the following module outcome:

  • Discuss and apply the concepts of social facilitation and social loafing to real life experiences.
  • Discuss the power and components of persuasion, especially as employed by advertisements.

Instructions for PSY 360 and MLS 560 Learners

After reading Chapters 7 and 8, watch the following video:

Top 10 Misleading Marketing Tactics (Links to an external site.) https://www.youtube.com/embed/M-HrTC8QCbM

Answer the following:

  • Other than the techniques identified in the video, what other persuasive tactics were you able to identify (use your textbook to help you)? In your own words, explain how the commercials you watched used these tactics to persuade others.
  • Social facilitation and social loafing are two contradictory outcomes when someone is part of a group. Describe a personal experience in which you were in a group and experienced either social facilitation or social loafing. What factors caused your experience to be one of facilitation (or loafing)?
  • How do you think being in a group might impact the effect of persuasive tactics in different situations?
