Instructions: Students will select ONE of the following topics for their Writing Assignment 2. Students will use the information from the Patterns of World History (vol 2) textbook, Chapter 24 and 25 to answer the following prompts. Students will write 1-2 paragraphs, using specific examples and details to support their comments (minimum 300 words). Students should also include a DIRECT QUOTE from the textbook. Please cite the quote by including the page number after the quote, such as “history is fun” (p. 44). In order to submit the assignment, students can either copy and paste it as a “text” entry into the space provided OR they can attach a WORD document. You cannot attach google pages, etc…. So, if you do not have Word, just use the text submission option. WRITING ASSIGNMENT 1: SELECT ONE: Japan’s Grand Opening and the Meiji Reforms Describe how the United States forced Japan to end its isolation and open itself to western trade. Describe the Meiji reforms and how they led to Japan’s ability to prevent a takeover by the West, as well as to victory over China in the War of 1894-1895 Or Ottoman and European Entanglements: Picking Apart the Weak Empire Discuss the often violent and contentious relations between the Ottomans and two European empires in succession: the Habsburgs and Russia. Discuss the factors that caused the tensions between the three empires: competition over land, access to central Asian trade routes, Balkan nationalism, and the weaknesses of the Ottomans (and Russians) compared with their Western European counterparts.
