Your commentary should include the following: – Present the author: career, provenance, occupation, training (all of those might not be accessible to you) – Present the text this passage is taken from, What was the target audience? where does it sit in the work? – What is this passage about? – Explain any of the vocabulary used by the author that is unclear – Who are the rulers mentioned in it? How are they presented? – How does it contribute to our understanding of one of the weekly topics of the course? What are the secondary sources studied on that week that can help you to discuss this source and how? If applicable how does it relate to your dissertation. I will attach my dissertation abstract with plan so you have an Idea of what my dissertation is about so you can link it to the essay. I have also started the essay so I will attach that too for you to get a head start. the primary source I want you to write a commentary on is called “Tabari volume 29” it is only a commentary of 5 pages so start from where it says “the events of this year:” and end it on the middle of page 8 where it says “according to size”
